2010 Stop 1: Kuala Terengganu
Terengganu is certainly one of the lesser known states of West Malaysia. In fact, many people who do know that this is a Malaysian state will not be able to tell you where it is…until they study a map! Most people will first hear about Terengganu when they are looking for a spectacular (and relatively economical) beach holiday that involves diving…because Terengganu is home to some of the best coral reefs situated within the waters of West Malaysia.
It isn’t surprising to find that Terengganu has a rich collection of off-shore islands with beach resorts. However, in this trip, we will be exploring the main peninsular. So what has this state to offer?
Let’s start with a quick overview of Terengganu. Located in the north eastern part of the West Malaysian peninsular north of Pahang and south of Kelantan.

A quick look into a Terengganu tourism website quickly revealed some interesting facts about this little known state. I found out that Terengganu has the longest beach in Malaysia (244 kilometers), that she hosts one of only six beaches where leatherback turtles visit to lay their eggs, that the working week begins on Sunday, and is home to one of the highest waterfalls in the country!
Our first leg of almost 550 kilometers will take us from Johor Bahru, through Kota Tinggi, Mersing, Pekan, Kuantan, Cherating, Dungun and Marang, to Kuala Terengganu, the state capital. While we will be making short stops along the way, this represents our first real opportunity for rest.
Our options for accommodation are plentiful but the most attractive ones are probably camping on a beach, or a quaint guest house of sorts.
Well, that is as far as my research has taken me today. Do give suggestions if you have any on this beautiful state on where we can put up, interesting places to visit, and good food to try out!
